The City of Sydney’s annual tree giveaway is the best gift you will get from the government this year (except maybe your tax return).
1000 trees will be up for grabs on Saturday, 30 March and each eligible household can take up to two free trees home. You can choose from 24 varieties including citrus trees, gardenia, magnolia, bottlebrush, camelia and more. If you are not sure how to care for your new plant, the City staff will be offering tips and advice on how to plant trees as well as information on general maintenance.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore hopes that the tree giveaway will help the City reach its target of increasing the local tree canopy by 50 per cent by 2030:
Trees are our best weapon in combatting the urban heat island effect. With Sydney sweltering through the hottest January on record this year, we need to plant more trees to keep our streets, parks and public spaces cool.
This is the fifth year the initiative is held. Since 2005, the City of Sydney has planted more than 13,000 trees, bringing the total close to 45,000. The social, economic and environmental benefits of trees in urban areas are undeniable. They cool us down, create habitat for birds, reduce air pollution and improve our mood.
